Beautifully written novel incorporating the tension (perhaps I should say intense dislike) between Church and Chapel in rural Wales. There is love, danger, deceit, loss, and dysfunctional families in abundance.The author inserts quite a few Welsh language words in her narrative but they are easily dealt with by the Google Translator.
I enjoyed it more than her later more widely known novel Garthowen which I also highly recommend.
Allen Raine is the pseudonym of Anne Adalisa Puddicombe (1836-1908).

I loved the setting for the story, the characters are well described, the circumstances under which they meet is definitely a situation that occurred many times back then, there are times when the story moved very very slowly and I own up to skipping some pages, but true love wins out in the end despite all kinds of obstacles thrown in its path. Could have had a stronger ending though. If they havent already made it into a film it would lend itself well to adaptation.
